The king saw the donkeys walking in a row and asked the potter, “How do you keep them straight?”
Potter replied, “Any donkey that breaks the line, I punish him,” “Because of this fear, they all walk straight.”
The king said, “Can you establish peace in the country?”
The potter said why not, and the king gave him the position.
One the very first day, a case of theft was brought before the potter.
“Cut off the thief’s hands,” decreed the potter.
The executioner looked at the Wazir and said in the ear of the potter, “Sir, this is the minister special man.”
“Cut off the thief’s hands,” said the potter again.
The minister himself then whispered in the potter’s ear, “Take care, sir. This is our special man.”
The potter said, “Let the thief’s hands be cut off and the intercessor’s tongue be cut off.”
And it was said that after only this one decision of the potter, peace was established in the whole country.
Peace can be established in our country, but for this, the hands of thieves will have to be cut off, and the tongues of some people will have to be cut off.

I understand the premise, but why only the tongues of ‘SOME’ people will have to be cut off/out… would not this negate from the reality of punishment…?
you are right, but to set an example for other and stop them from committing crime, tough decisions have to be taken. Tongue of some people mean those few who took the initiative for crime, if those few would be shutt down at an initial stage then the rest of others will not even try to think about such crimes.
As I said, I understand the premise… my only query is why ALL thieves lost a hand, but only SOME of those who turned a blind eye to thievery were penalized… this would imply that not all are equal in the eyes of the Potter… whereas in the initial stage off the story, ALL the donkeys were treated equally in the eyes of the Potter and the King… so trusting in his integrity, the King saw the Potter as impartial…!
But when later SOME, are not treated like ALL, them it is implied that the integrity of the Potter as been compromised…!
Realizing this, I feel the King would be honor bound to take the Potter’s tongue… maybe even his life…!
