One of the biggest problems in a village in Yemen was the access to clean drinking water, for which the villagers had to walk long distances through narrow mountain passes, dangerous gorges and deep ravines to reach the source of clean water.
When the villagers came to fetch drinking water from the spring, they had to take a narrow and dark path with dangerous turns beside a valley with deep ravines. On reaching this dangerous point, children, elderly men and women, and many people died due to slipping and falling from donkeys.
Decades later, in order to find a solution to the problem of falling to death from this deadly bend, the suffering villagers meet with the dignitaries of another distant village.
A wise man from another village asked him, “Is there anyone among you who as a child fell down this dangerous bend in the valley more than once while going with the donkey to the water spring”?
A few said yes, we have fallen there many times and got injured.
Why don’t you take an alternative safe route to reach the water when you know that route is not safe, the questioner wondered.
The villagers gave a shocking answer to this question, they said, “We cannot change our route because we follow the donkeys all the way, and it is the donkeys who guide us and give us water.” Take to the fountain.
We accept to die and get injured, but we can not go against the thinking of our donkeys.
So friends, we are not those people who have made donkeys as their leaders and have associated their fate with these donkeys.
یمن کے ایک گاؤں کا سب سے بڑا مسئلہ پینے والے صاف پانی کے حصول کا تھا، جس کے لیے اہل قریہ پہاڑی تنگ دروں، خطرناک گھاٹیوں اور گہری کھائیوں والی وادیوں سے گزر کر طویل مسافت کے بعد صاف پانی کے چشمے تک پہنچتے تھے۔
گاؤں کے لوگ جب چشمے سے پینے کا پانی بھرنے کے لیے آتے جاتے تھے تو انہیں گہری کھائیوں والی ایک وادی کے پاس خطرناک موڑ والا تنگ و تاریک راستہ اختیار کرنا پڑتا تھا۔ اس خطرناک موڑ پر پہنچ کر بچوں، بڑی عمر کے مرد و خواتین اور گدھوں سے پھسل کر گرنے سے متعدد افراد کی موت واقع ہوچکی تھی۔
کئی دہائیوں کے بعد، اس جان لیوا خطرناک موڑ سے گر کر مرنے والے مسئلے کا حل تلاش کرنے کی خاطر، مصائب میں مبتلا گاؤں والے ،کسی دوسرے دور پار کے گاؤں کے معززین کے ہاں جمع ہوئے۔
دوسرے گاؤں کے ایک سمجھدار شخص نے ان سے پوچھا “کیا آپ میں سے ایسا کوئی شخص ہے جو بچپن میں گدھے کے ساتھ پانی والے چشمے کی طرف جاتے ہوئے ایک سے زیادہ مرتبہ وادی کے اس خطرناک موڑ سے گرا تھا”؟
چند ایک نے کہا ہاں ہم متعدد بار وہاں گر کر زخمی ہو چکے ہیں ۔
پوچھنے والے نے حیرت سے کہا جب آپ جانتے ہیں کہ وہ رستہ محفوظ نہیں ہے تو آپ پانی تک پہنچنے کے لیے کوئی اور متبادل محفوظ راستہ کیوں نہیں اختیار کرتے؟
اس سوال پر اہل قریہ نے چونکا دینے والا جواب دیا، ان کا کہنا تھا “ہم اپنا راستہ اس لیے تبدیل نہیں کرسکتے کہ کیونکہ ہم سارا سفر گدھوں کی پیروی کرتے ہوئے طے کرتے ہیں، اور گدھے ہی ہیں جو ہماری رہنمائی کرتے ہوئے ہمیں پانی کے چشمے تک لے کر جاتے ہیں۔
تو دوستو جب ہم گدھوں کو رہبر بنائیں گے اور اپنی قسمت کو ان گدھوں سے وابستہ کر لیں گے تو ہمیشہ نقصان میں ہی رہیں گے۔
