When marriage was decided by sword and force — a horrifying tradition in Germany⚔️

In medieval Germany, where decisions of law and justice were often left to human strength and luck, there was a tradition that seems incredible to modern man. This tradition was the matrimonial combat — a contest in which husbands and wives decided their disputes on the battlefield rather than in court.

This custom was called Trial by Combat in German, and it was used not only between enemies, but also between husbands and wives.

This was no ordinary fight.

Its rules were both strange and terrifying.

The husband was made to stand in a deep pit, so deep that he could not get out. One of his hands was tied behind his back, so that he could not use his full strength.

On the other hand, the wife stood free in the field, but her freedom was not complete. Heavy weights were tied to her clothes to slow her down.

A bag was given to her in her hand, which was filled with stones.

This was her weapon.

The husband was given three wooden sticks.
But there was also a strange condition — if he touched the edge of the pit while fighting, he had to drop one of his weapons as punishment.

This fight was not only physical, but also psychological.

Before this terrible confrontation, the husband and wife were given a month or two.
This time was so that they might reconcile, end their differences, and avoid this fate.

But if there was no reconciliation, then the field was prepared.

People would gather.

And the end of a marriage was written in the form of war.

⚰️ The fate of the loser — death

The outcome of this war was not just defeat or victory.

It was a decision of life and death.

If the husband lost, he was punished by beheading.

And if the wife lost, she was buried alive in the ground.

This law was based on the belief that God would grant victory to the rightful one.

People believed that whoever wins would be the true one.

📜 Justice or injustice?

When we look at this tradition today, it seems less like justice and more like a terrible ordeal.

It was a time when love, relationships, and life — all were decided by strength and endurance.

A husband standing in the ground, and standing before him the woman he had once promised to spend his life with —
and now there was only one thing between the two:
Survival.
