It is not safe to carry everything that shines
Once upon a time, two mules were traveling along the same narrow path.
The first mule was carrying heavy bags of gold coins. He was very proud of his load. He walked with his head held high and deliberately knocked the coins together so that they could be heard. Every step he took was as if he were saying, “Look at me, look how important I am.”
The second mule had ordinary bags of grain. He walked quietly behind, calm and out of sight. No noise, no show, no need to impress anyone.
Suddenly a group of robbers emerged from the bushes.
They were not interested in the grain. Their eyes were directly on the sleeping mule. They surrounded him, beat him mercilessly, and tore open the bags to rob him of the treasure. The poor mule fell wounded on the side of the road, shivering in pain and tears streaming down his face.
On the other hand, no one touched the mule carrying the grain. He stopped, looked at his companion and said in a low voice with regret:
“I am grateful that I only had grain. At least my simplicity (humility) did not ask me for my blood and tears.”
The main lesson:
This story is not telling us to reject wealth, but rather teaching us how to handle something valuable with wisdom.
Fame and Trial: The taller the tree, the stronger the winds it faces. When people show off too much, they invite unnecessary attention, envy and danger. What makes “noise” is seen, and what is seen is on target.
There is strength in silence: Being quiet or showing off less is not weakness but a wise way to protect yourself. When you don’t need constant praise or recognition from others, you eliminate many unnecessary problems from your life.
True Value: The greatest truth is that a person’s true value is not in what he has accumulated outside, but in what is built inside him. The sleeping mule mistook his “possession” for his “identity”. He thought this treasure was making him important, but in the end, this same treasure only hurt him instead of giving him strength.
A wise person learns this quickly:
Not every blessing needs to be declared.
Not every success needs spectators.
And not every kind of wealth is worth showing off.
Sometimes peace is the real luxury, silence is the real shield, and humility is the wisdom that preserves life.
This is a lesson that aims to teach:
Avoiding show-offs: Excessively showing off your wealth or achievements can bring you into the eyes of envious people and enemies.
Simplicity is protection: The picture shows that the donkey loaded with gold is a target for danger (eyes hidden in the bushes), while the donkey carrying grain seems safe.
