An old sage was sitting with his grandson on the edge of the forest. It was evening, the last rays of the sun were falling from the trees. There was peace on the old man’s face and a deep light of experience in his eyes.
The grandson looked a little worried. He said softly to his grandfather:
“Grandfather! There is a strange battle going on in my heart. Sometimes I want to be good, but sometimes I also feel anger, jealousy and hatred. Why is this happening?”
The old sage smiled and said:
“Son, this battle is not only in your heart, but it is inside every human being.”
The grandson looked at his grandfather in surprise.
The grandfather continued:
“There are two wolves in every human being’s heart.”
The grandson asked:
“Two wolves? How?”
The old man said:
“The first wolf represents evil. He is full of anger, envy, greed, pride, lies and hatred. He pushes man to harm others and follow the wrong path.”
Then he said softly:
“The second wolf represents good. He is full of love, patience, truth, compassion, humility and hope. He leads man to do good deeds and help others.”
The grandson thought for a while, then he asked:
“Grandpa! If both wolves live inside every man… then who wins?”
The old wise man smiled and looked at his grandson and replied softly:
“Victory always belongs to the wolf… the one you feed.”
The grandson fell silent after hearing this, but there was an expression on his face as if he had understood a great secret of life.
