A mouse lived in a farmer’s house, making a hole in the wall. One day, the mouse saw the farmer and his wife taking something out of a bag. The mouse thought it might be some food.

Upon closer inspection, he found that it was a mousetrap. Sensing danger, he went to the backyard and told the pigeon about the mousetrap. The pigeon, mocking the mouse, said, “What does that have to do with me? I won’t get caught in it.” Disheartened, the mouse went to tell the chicken, who laughed and said, “It’s not my problem, buddy.”

The mouse, even more disappointed, told the goat, who burst into laughter and rolled on the ground.

That night, there was a snap sound from the mousetrap. A poisonous snake got caught in it. In the dark, the farmer’s wife mistook the snake’s tail for the mouse and tried to remove it. The snake bit her. Her condition worsened, and the farmer called a herbal doctor, who advised giving her pigeon soup. The pigeon was cooked.

Hearing the news, many relatives came to visit the farmer’s house. To feed them, the chicken was slaughtered the next day. A few days later, the farmer’s wife died. During the funeral and the feast that followed, the goat was also slaughtered.

The mouse had already gone far away! Very far.

Moral: Next time someone tells you their problem and you think it doesn’t concern you, wait and think again. We are all in danger. If one member, one class, one citizen is in danger, the whole nation is in danger. Step out of the circles of caste, religion, and class.
