The famous leader of Quraysh, Walid bin Mughirah, had a son with extraordinary qualities. He was tall, strong, eagle-eyed, an expert in military and political maneuvers, a master of swordsmanship, a master of battle tactics, fearless, fearless, a magician of the art of war, a fiery orator, noble-minded, intelligent and cunning. The world knows this man as Khalid bin Walid.
Most of his childhood, from childhood to boyhood, from boyhood to youth, from youth to adulthood, he spent most of his life fighting, acquiring military skills and teaching. During the pre-Islamic era, he fought many battles against Islam, but except for Uhud, he did not achieve any significant success in any of them. He himself used to say:
“Before accepting Islam, I used to come before the Holy Prophet (ï·º) in almost every battle with new determination and enthusiasm, but every time, the fear and terror of him (ï·º) would come upon my heart in such a way that my morale would be low and I would feel as if some unseen power was protecting him (ï·º). So I became sure that these people would prevail over the whole world.”
(Tabaqat Ibn Sa’d)
Months and years passed in this way. Until he was over forty years old. One day, his brother Walid bin Walid, who had converted to Islam, wrote a letter to his brother Khalid. The brother said in the letter:
“O my dear brother! The Messenger of Allah (ï·º) asked me where Khalid was? I said, O Messenger of Allah (ï·º), God willing, he will be at your feet very soon.”
He himself says: “After this letter, one day I dreamed that I was going from a narrow, dark, and terrible place to a green, lush, and open field. When I opened my eyes, my world had changed.”
He says: I asked Uthman bin Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) to go to Medina, and he happily agreed to go with me, and we set out in the path of Allah. We had just gone a little distance when we met Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him), who was also going to Medina for the same purpose. So we presented ourselves to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Lord of the Two Worlds (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the Companions (may Allah be pleased with him) out of love, “Mecca has thrown its heart and soul towards you.” When I accepted Islam, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him)! Based on your intelligence, wisdom, understanding, and insight, I had strong hopes that one day you would definitely become a Muslim.”
He belonged to the respected tribe of Quraysh, Banu Makhzum, which was famous for its war skills. He went to Medina after the Treaty of Hudaybiyah in 8 AH and before the conquest of Mecca and embraced Islam.
After embracing Islam, he went to Mutah to fight against the Romans under the leadership of Hazrat Zaid bin Haritha. The Roman army consisted of about one hundred thousand soldiers. The battle was very bloody. The commander of the Islamic army, Zaid bin Haritha, was martyred. After that, Ja’far Tayyar held the flag and was also martyred. Then Abdullah bin Rawaha raised the flag and was also martyred. The Islamic army was in great difficulty. Finally, the people chose him as their commander. He gave a powerful speech and breathed new life into the entire army. Then he attacked so vigorously that the corpses of the Romans were piled up. In this terrible battle, he fought so fiercely that nine swords broke in his hands. He says, “In the end, I had only one small Yemeni sword left. Allah Almighty led the Islamic army back to Medina safely under his leadership.”
The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had come to know about this incident through revelation. So he said to his companions:
“First, Zaid took the flag, and he was martyred. Then, Ja’far took the flag, and he was also martyred. Then, Abdullah bin Rawaha took the flag, and he was also martyred.” Saying this, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was overcome with emotion. “Until now, the flag was taken by a man who is one of the swords of Allah and fought such a battle that Allah Almighty granted victory to his hand.”
After this battle, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) bestowed upon him the title of “Saif Allah.”
Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) participated in more than a hundred battles and did not lose a single battle in his entire life.
During the reign of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) and Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA), he played a key role in ending the sedition of apostasy, the conquest of Iraq, and the Battle of Yarmouk against Syria (the Roman Empire). In Syria, he impressed the enemy with his military prowess to such an extent that the world began to call him invincible. Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (RA) kept a few hairs of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in his war cap. He himself used to say that whenever I fought wearing this cap, I was never defeated.
He was an excellent orator. He used to breathe new life into the entire army with a little fiery speech. When the Persians confronted him and tried to intimidate him, he sent a message:
“I have a people who love death as much as you love wine.”
He often wore battle clothes. Due to wearing too much armor, his clothes would become rusty. Sometimes, to frighten the enemy, he would attach a bloody arrow to his turban.
He used to say: “I would rather spend the night with a newlywed bride than travel all night in the snow and attack the enemy in the morning.”
Fighting, clashing, and fighting the enemy had become a part of his life. Facing death seemed like a game to him. He says:
“I have never fled from a battle thinking that Allah Almighty would grant me martyrdom or an honorable victory.”
He was very keen on knowledge, but due to his busy schedule, he had very little time. He was also the scribe of the revelations of the Holy Prophet (ï·º) for some time.
When it became known among the Muslims that the army led by Khalid bin
Walid (RA) never lost, so Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (RA) removed him from the military leadership so that the people’s faith would not be damaged. Because victory and victory come from Allah Almighty. Despite his removal, he fought bravely in every battle and used the best war tactics.
When the news of victory against the Romans was received, the first Caliph Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) said:
“By Allah! Now women have become incapable of giving birth to a son like Khalid bin Walid.”
Similarly, once Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) was given some advice about Khalid bin Walid (RA), so he said:
“I will never sheathe this sword that Allah has drawn from its sheath against the infidels.”
When Hazrat Khalid bin Walid was in the city of Al-Hirah in Iraq, the Christians or Persians there told him that we have a deadly poison that kills a person instantly. Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (RA) ordered the poison, placed it on his palm and recited “Bismillah” and drank it. By the command of Allah, the poison had no effect on him, which amazed his enemies and made it a sign of his truthfulness and the truthfulness of Islam.
Some hadith scholars, while discussing the chain of transmission of this incident, describe it as “weak” or “broken”, while others consider it a great virtue of the Companion and an example of his complete trust in Allah.
This incident of Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (RA) was a specific and unusual case. Under normal circumstances, it is strictly forbidden for anyone to deliberately drink poison or put themselves in danger.
When Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (RA) was in the region of Iraq, a man was brought before him who had a skin or vessel containing wine. At that time, he was in great need of honey. Seeing him, he prayed to Allah: “O Allah! Make it honey.”
That wine was immediately transformed into pure honey by the command of Allah. This was his miracle.
Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (RA) was a miraculous person. He holds the highest position among the greatest military commanders of the world. He was never defeated in any of the wars he fought. Even today, the world is investigating his life, war tactics and achievements.
He died in the city of Homs in the country of Syria in 21 AH (642 AD). At the time of his death, he was saddened that there was no place on his body where there was no wound, yet instead of martyrdom, death was coming on his bed.
When this great general of the world and a distinguished companion of the Prophet (ï·º) passed away, the Islamic world was in turmoil. Men and women, slaves and maidservants also wept over his death. A maidservant in Medina said upon his death:
“O Khalid! When the color of men’s faces changed, you alone would have proved to be more useful than a million.”
When Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (RA) heard this from the maidservant, he said:
“You are absolutely right. Indeed, he was like that.”
May Allah be pleased with him
Have you ever thought, O young Muslim!?
What was that kidney of yours whose broken star
was crushed by the people who raised you in the embrace of love
who placed the crown of the head of the king at your feet?
