In ancient times, a wrestler was very skilled in his art. He would defeat any wrestler who came to compete with him. Therefore, the king respected him very much because of his ability and skill. This famous wrestler taught or used to teach the art of wrestling to many young people. He made one of these young people his special disciple and taught him all the tricks that he knew. As a precaution, he taught him only one trick.
Time passed like this. The famous wrestler must have been old and his favorite disciple became the greatest wrestler of his time. The requirement of nobility was that he would acknowledge the favor of his teacher that he had taught him his skill and made him so capable, but he was so bad-natured that one day he boasted in the king’s court that indeed my teacher is greater than me in age, but in strength and the art of wrestling I am now greater than him.
The king was very displeased with this statement of his. He ordered that the master and the disciple wrestle so that it could be decided who was the greatest between the two. So a ring was prepared in a field. And the master and his disciple entered the ring to wrestle. The young disciple, intoxicated by his strength, came swinging in front of the master. It seemed that even if an iron mountain were in front of him, he would uproot it and throw it away. But when he shook hands with the master and the wrestling began, the master tried the same trick that he had not taught the incompetent disciple and lifted him high and threw him to the ground.
Chants of wow and wow were heard from all sides. The king gave the old wrestler a robe and a heavy reward and cursed the unfaithful disciple. He said that the master had won only because he had not taught me this trick, which he had used to defeat me.
The teacher replied immediately, and I did not teach you this trick with the idea that if he ever comes to fight me, I can protect myself. The wise have said it absolutely right that you should not make even your best friend capable of harming you if he ever comes to fight.
This is a strange custom of the times. People oppress the faithful. People hold those from whom they learn the art of archery at the tip of a dagger.
Lesson:- Hazrat Saadi has pointed out this truth in this story that just as there is a difference between competence and incompetence among humans. Similarly, there is a difference between meanness and nobility, and it is not far from a scoundrel to be ready to put his teacher, not his own father, at his feet. Therefore, the requirement of wisdom is that while teaching knowledge and skills, one should keep this in mind and not be careless about the idea of one’s safety.
