When Allah Almighty ordered Hazrat Musa (AS) and Hazrat Harun (AS) to go to Pharaoh, invite him to monotheism and free the Children of Israel from slavery, they fearlessly entered Pharaoh’s court.
Hazrat Musa (AS) said:
“I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds, free the Children of Israel with me.”
Pharaoh said arrogantly:
“Who is your Lord? And what sign have you brought of your truth?”
By Allah’s command, Hazrat Musa (AS) threw his staff on the ground, and it became a living and terrifying snake. Then he took out his hand from his collar, and it was bright and shining white. But Pharaoh, immersed in arrogance, dismissed even these obvious miracles as magic. He gathered great magicians from all over Egypt.
On the day of a great festival, when thousands of people had gathered in the field, the competition began. The magicians said:
“Moses! Will you throw first or will we?”
Hazrat Musa (AS) said:
“You throw first.”
The magicians threw their ropes and sticks. Due to the effect of the magic, they all started to look like snakes running. The field seemed to be filled with snakes. The people became afraid. For a moment, a slight fear came to Hazrat Musa (AS)’s heart.
At that moment, Allah Almighty revealed:
“Do not be afraid, you will surely prevail. Throw your stick.”
As soon as Hazrat Musa (AS) threw his stick, it became a great dragon and swallowed all the ropes and sticks of the magicians. All the deception was over. The veil of magic was torn.
The magicians, who were the greatest experts in this art, immediately understood that this was not magic, but a true miracle of Allah’s power. They all fell down in prostration and cried out:
“We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, the Lord of Musa and Harun!”
Pharaoh trembled with anger and threatened:
“You believe without my permission? I will cut off your hands and feet from opposite sides and crucify you!”
But the light of faith had descended in their hearts. The magicians replied steadfastly:
“We do not care. We are returning to our Lord, and we hope that He will forgive us our sins.”
Thus, Allah Almighty prevailed over His Prophet with the truth and disgraced falsehood forever.
