According to an ancient Arabian tale, a powerful king was very fond of hunting. He had an eagle that he had raised since childhood and that he loved more than his own life. That eagle always sat on the king’s shoulder and proved to be his best companion in hunting.
Finding Water
One day, the king went out hunting in a scorching desert with a few of his soldiers. The heat was so intense that the water in the water bottles ran out and the king was separated from his caravan and left alone. He was in a bad state due to thirst and he wandered around in search of shade and water.
After a long time, he saw water dripping drop by drop from a rock at the foot of a hill. The king happily took out his cup and with great effort and patience started collecting these drops in the cup. When the cup was full and the king put it to his lips to drink, suddenly his pet eagle swooped down and knocked the cup out of his hand.
Anger and Regret
The king thought that perhaps the bird was also thirsty. He filled the cup again, but as soon as he started to drink, the eagle flapped its wings again and knocked the cup over. When the same thing happened a third time, the king was furious. In anger, he drew his sword and struck the eagle, wounding it, and the eagle fell to the side in agony.
The king muttered in anger: “If only I had not been thirsty at that time, I would have left you to suffer, you wretched animal!”
Then he thought that instead of collecting drop by drop, he should go to the top of the mountain and see where this water was coming from. When he reached the top of the mountain, the ground gave way under his feet…
The truth revealed
He saw that a very poisonous snake was lying dead in a small pond above and its poison was mixing with the water and falling down drop by drop.
The king remained silent. He understood why his faithful eagle was preventing him from drinking water. The eagle was actually saving him from death, but the king sacrificed his most loyal friend in his anger and haste.
Lesson (Advice)
This story teaches us two important things:
The end of haste: Never make any big decision in anger and haste, because anger obscures reason.
Apparently, behind what we think is bad for us, there is a great benefit or salvation from Allah.
