A story from European literature
There was a landowner, very rich. All the good and fertile lands of the village were his property. At the end of these lands was a piece of barren land in which nothing grew. The landowner thought, there is no use for this land, why not show his favor by giving it to a poor farmer. If his hard work makes the land good and starts yielding crops, then he will take it back.
Many farmers worked for the landowner. From among them, he chose a farmer about whom he was sure that if he ever had to take the land back, he would quietly return it. The landowner called the farmer and said, “I give you the piece of my land near the mound. I have nothing to do with it anymore. You work hard and improve it. Whatever crops you grow in it, it will be yours.” The farmer thanked the landowner and started working on the land the next day.
He worked hard for a week to clear the ground of pebbles, stones and weeds and then started to plow it. But at one point the plow got stuck in something. He stopped the plow and hit the spot hard with the shovel to remove the thing. As soon as the shovel hit the ground, there was a sound like iron hitting iron. He was very surprised that what was the use of iron in the ground! He threw the shovel and slowly started to remove the soil from the ground with the shovel.
After removing about a foot of soil, he touched it with his hand and felt it as if it were an iron box. He quickly removed the soil. It really was a box. Now his interest increased. He looked around. There was no one for a long distance. He dug the soil around the box and shook the box with all his strength. But it was so heavy that it did not move at all. There was a thick lock in it. When the farmer hit the shovel on the lock, it broke. He quickly lifted the lid. His eyes widened in surprise. The box was full of gold coins. The farmer could not believe his eyes. He turned the coins upside down. They were indeed gold coins. He looked around again. There was no one around. He picked up a coin and put it in his pocket, closed the box, and leveled the ground with soil. The man was wise. He thought that if he worked hastily, all the wealth would be lost. He kept plowing quietly and at the same time kept thinking about who he could get help from to take the box from here.
Finally, he came to the decision that he should not tell this secret to anyone except his wife. But the problem was that his wife was very sensitive. Whenever he told his wife a secret, she would spread it all over the village.
After thinking about it, the farmer found a solution for this too. He went to the city and sold the coin to a goldsmith. The goldsmith gave him so many rupees that his pockets were full. Now he went to the pakora shop and bought a bunch of pakoras. Taking the pakoras, he went to his field and scattered the pakoras all over the field. After that, he went to the city again and bought two hundred samosas, a broom and four pigeons from the market. Then he got a laborer to carry all these things and came home. But he did not enter the house, but climbed onto the roof from the back wall and tied all the things with ropes and pulled them up. His wife did not hear a word.
Now the farmer scattered pakoras all over the roof and the mandirs. Then he came down scattering pakoras on the stairs and hid the broom and the pigeons in a room.
On seeing him, his wife said, “You just don’t care about the house. You keep wasting your time all day on this useless land. I ask, will we always remain hungry like this? Leave this land. Do some other work that will earn you four paise?”
The farmer said, “Oh, my good sir, please be patient. Let me catch my breath. I am coming home exhausted, and you have started making things up from above. Come, give me something to eat.”
The wife said, “What should I give you to eat? There was nothing to cook at home. I will ask the neighbors. Maybe they have some left over.”
Saying this, she climbed the ladder to go to the roof and was surprised to see the pakoras. When she reached the roof, there were pakoras everywhere. She shouted from there, “Hey…! Hey…! Come here.” The farmer said, “What is it?”
The wife said, “Look, today it has rained on our house with pakoras. Just come up….”
The farmer went up and said, “Really. This is wonderful. Gather them together. We will eat comfortably for a week.”
While they were eating the pakoras, the farmer said, “I have good news for you. But the condition is that no one else knows about this except you.” The wife said, “You should be completely calm. I will not mention it to anyone.” On this, the farmer told his wife about the box. But he did not tell her anything about the pakoras, samosas, brooms and pigeons. Thinking of so much wealth, the farmer’s wife’s mouth fell open. She said, “Come on, let’s bring that box now.”
The farmer said, “What are you talking about? Let it be night.” When it got dark, both of them left the house. The farmer said, “You go first. I will come after a while.” When the wife left, the farmer quickly slaughtered the pigeons and soaked the broom in their blood. Then he ran to meet his wife.
Both of them were going towards the ground when the farmer secretly shook a bush, from which blood splashed and fell on his wife’s clothes. When the wife saw the clothes, she said: “Hey, the sky is completely clear. The stars are out. Where did this rain come from?”
The farmer said, “When it rains in clear weather, blood falls instead of water.” Talking like this, they reached their land. Stepping into the fieldThe farmer’s wife shouted:
“Hey, look! It’s raining samosas!” Saying this, she picked up the samosas and started eating them. After that, both of them took out the box of ashrafis and walked towards the house in silence. On the way, there was a mansion of the landlord. When the farmer and his wife passed by the mansion, they heard the groaning of the watchman of the mansion. The farmer knew that the watchman had been ill for a long time. The wife asked:
“Who is this crying?” The farmer said, “I heard that a demon has taken the landlord away. That’s why his wife and children are crying.” After reaching home, the farmer dug the ground and with the help of his wife, he buried the box of ashrafis in it. As soon as he woke up in the morning, the farmer’s wife started demanding from the farmer to give her some ashrafis to make nice clothes and ornaments. But the farmer was afraid that if he spent the money like this, people would wonder where he suddenly got so much wealth. Secondly, he did not want his wife to start squandering her wealth. She refused to give him the gold coins.
The wife, as usual, fought with her husband and then, angry, went to the neighbor’s house. The farmer took the box out of the ground and dug a new hole in the corner of the yard and buried it in it. In the evening, the farmer’s wife returned and went to her room and lay down. After a while, the neighbor’s wife came and the farmer’s wife said to her, “Sister, I have something to tell you. But the condition is that you do not mention it to anyone else.”
The neighbor assured her that she would not tell anyone, so the farmer’s wife told her about the box containing the gold coins. Nothing stays in the stomach of a woman. The neighbor told someone else, and in this way the word spread throughout the village. The landlord also heard about it.
The landlord came to the farmer’s house in a rage and said, “You are a very deceitful and dishonest person. I gave you the land thinking of your poverty. If a chest of gold coins was found in this land, you should have handed it over to me immediately. Where is that chest?”
The farmer was frightened at first, but then he overcame his fear and said, “Your Majesty, how could I have such a huge fortune and hidden it from you? There is no such thing.”
The landlord roared and said, “The whole village knows about this. Your wife has told everyone. She herself brought that chest with you. Don’t be too clever. Tell me quickly, where is that chest?”
The farmer folded his hands in front of the landlord and said, “Your Majesty, this is a big liar. Everyone knows that she always fights with me. She has also used this to defame me.”
The farmer’s wife, who had been silent until now, suddenly burst out, “Why are you lying? You didn’t take me with you that day?”
The farmer said, “What day are you talking about?”
The wife said, “The day when it rained pakoras in the evening and samosas at night.”
Hearing this from the farmer’s wife, the landlord thought that the woman had lost her mind. Sometimes it rained pakoras and samosas too!
The farmer was very happy with the success of his scheme. He asked his wife, “What else happened that day?”
The wife said, “It rained blood. What else was going to happen?”
The landlord said to the farmer, “What kind of talk is your wife talking about? We have never heard or seen a rain of blood.”
The farmer said, “She always keeps on babbling like this.” Then he said to his wife, “If you remember anything else, tell me that too…”
“Yes, yes,” the wife said, “That day a demon had taken away the landlord and people were crying in the mansion…”
Hearing this, the landlord got angry. He said to his servants, “Repair this witch thoroughly. Someone who has the courage to take me away. This poor man has lied and unjustly defamed the poor farmer…”
The farmer’s wife said, “Your Majesty, don’t listen to her. I will show you the place where we buried the box…”
On the landlord’s orders, the servants dug up the place where the farmer’s wife said the box of the nobles had been buried. But nothing came out of it.
Now the landlord was convinced that there must be something wrong with the woman’s mind. He stomped his feet in anger and left.
The farmer said to his wife, “What do you think now? And tell people this and eat your shoes.”
The wife was very ashamed of what she had done. She apologized to her husband and never told anyone about the house in the future. After some time, they both left the village and went to the city and lived happily there.
