Early in the morning, a large wooden boat set out to cross a wide river. It was carrying merchants, farmers, children, and the elderly—all with the hope that the journey would take them across to a prosperous land.
But there was a problem.
Instead of a captain to steer the boat, several men stood around the steering wheel, each wearing a magnificent captain’s hat.
“I know the way!” the first captain shouted, pulling the wheel sharply to the left.
“You’re wrong!” the second argued, pulling it to the right.
A third captain grabbed the wheel and tried to force it to straighten. “No, no! The river turns this way!”
Soon, more captains joined in. Each was shouting louder than the other. Each was pushing and pulling the wheel in his own direction. No one was willing to listen to the others.
Below deck, the passengers began to feel the chaos.
The boat was rocking violently. Drums of cargo were rolling about. Water was pouring in over the sides of the boat. Mothers held their children to their chests, while merchants struggled to hold on to their goods.
An old woman shouted, “Who’s steering the boat?”
Someone answered, “No one knows!”
The captains were so busy arguing that they didn’t notice the storm clouds approaching. They were too lost in the struggle for power to agree on a common course.
The boat began to turn around.
The current of the river was getting stronger. The waves were crashing against the sides of the boat. But the captains were still arguing.
Finally, a young boy among the passengers shouted upriver:
“If you’re all captains, then who’s showing us the way?”
The captains fell silent for a moment—but no one left the wheel.
And the boat, still confused and directionless, drifted on, while the frightened passengers hoped that someone would guide them.
Moral Lesson
No nation, institution, or society can move forward as long as its leaders are mired in conflict and hostility. When those in leadership struggle for power instead of working together, progress is stunted and the common people suffer the consequences.
True leadership requires unity of purpose, humility, and a spirit of working together for the common good. Without clear direction and coordinated action, even the strongest boat can lose its way.
