An astrologer used to predict the time of death of people by looking at their hands, and the strange thing was that the person would die at the exact time he announced. His fame had spread throughout the country. Rich or poor, everyone would come to him and place their hands in front of him with trembling hearts. When this news reached the Sultan, a slight fear arose in the Sultan’s heart, although he was a brave and wise ruler. The Sultan immediately ordered the soldiers to bring the astrologer to the palace.
When the astrologer came to the palace, there was neither fear nor panic on his face, as if he already knew everything. The Sultan looked at him carefully and said,
“Can you predict the time of death by looking at the hand?”
The astrologer bowed his head and replied,
“If Allah wills, I will tell you only what I see.”
The Sultan extended his hand. The astrologer came closer, looked at the hand silently for a few moments, then his face became serious. He said in a low voice,
“Your Majesty, you will die before sunset tomorrow evening.”
It was heard that silence fell in the court. The faces of the vizier, the emir, and the soldiers all turned pale. But the Sultan kept a stern expression on his face. He signaled the astrologer to leave. The astrologer turned silently and left the palace.
The Sultan could not sleep all night. Sometimes he looked at the sword, sometimes at the throne, sometimes at the high walls of the palace. He realized for the first time that power, strength, and wealth were all helpless. When morning came, the Sultan was extremely restless. He looked at his hand again and again, as if he felt a line of death emerging. Suddenly he felt as if life was leaving his thumb, a cold wave ran through his body.
The Sultan immediately ordered the astrologer to be summoned again.
In a short time, the astrologer was present in the court. The Sultan said in a stern tone,
“It’s not yet evening, but I feel a strange feeling in my body. Tell me the truth, is my death near yet?”
The astrologer looked into the Sultan’s eyes and said,
“Your Majesty, the time of death does not change, it’s just that a person’s heart weakens.”
The Sultan was silent for a moment, then suddenly he asked an unexpected question,
“Well, then tell me… when will you die?”
The astrologer was shocked to hear this question. His face changed color. He lowered his eyes and remained silent.
The Sultan asked again,
“Can’t you see your hand? Or is your knowledge gone now?”
The astrologer’s hands started trembling slightly. He said softly,
“Your Majesty… my death is one day before yours.”
Hearing this, a meaningful smile came to the Sultan’s face. He looked at the court and ordered in a loud voice,
“Soldiers! Put this astrologer in prison immediately and execute him today.”
The astrologer shouted,
“Your Majesty! What are you doing? You have heard it yourself, my death precedes yours!”
The Sultan replied in a cold tone,
“That is why you have to die today, so that the time of my death tomorrow will be proven wrong.”
The astrologer was dragged away. He was killed that same day. Evening fell, night came, and the next day passed. The Sultan was alive, healthy, and sitting on the throne.
A wave of joy swept through the court. Everyone thought that the Sultan had defeated fate. But there was a strange uneasiness in the Sultan’s heart. He dismissed the ministers and sat in solitude and began to think.
Suddenly the Sultan felt a severe pain in his chest. He was about to rise from the throne when his steps faltered. All that came out of his lips was,
“Allah…”
And he fell to the ground.
When the wise men came and saw, the Sultan had passed away.
That day, everyone understood the truth that neither the astrologer nor the Sultan is the master of death. Death is neither confined in the lines of the hand, nor in the control of man. The time that has been written, is neither forward nor backward. Man lives only in an illusion that perhaps he can change destiny, but in reality destiny is driving him.
And thus this story became a lesson:
Only Allah knows the time of death, all other claims are just deception.
